Knee and hip
Osteoarthritis rehabilitation – knee and hip
Osteoarthritis is the world’s most common joint disease, and it most often affects the knee and hip. The diagnosis does not mean that the joint is broken or that you have to stop moving. On the contrary: movement is the most important treatment for osteoarthritis.
In osteoarthritis rehabilitation I combine osteopathic treatment with guided strength training. From one professional you get both treatment that eases pain and a training programme that helps your knee or hip cope with daily life and hobbies again.

Movement is medicine for osteoarthritis
The remaining cartilage surfaces need movement and load to stay in good condition. When you protect a joint because of pain, the surrounding muscles weaken and the symptoms often get worse.
Rehabilitation aims to strengthen the thigh, buttock and calf muscles, improve joint mobility and restore your confidence in the joint. Osteopathic treatment eases pain and stiffness, which makes training easier.
Training takes place with guidance at R5 gym in Metsälä or as a home programme. I teach you the correct technique and suitable loads.
Rehabilitation
How rehabilitation works
First we go through your diagnosis and symptoms and what osteoarthritis actually means. I examine the range of movement, muscle strength and function of the joint with different movements.
Then I put together a training programme for you that starts with easy exercises using your body weight or light weights. The load is increased gradually over a few weeks.
You usually do not need to give up your hobbies. Often it is enough to adjust the amount and intensity of exercise for a while and then build back up gradually.

When to see a doctor
Osteoarthritis is diagnosed by a doctor based on symptoms and examination. See a doctor if:
- the joint swells a lot, is red and hot or you have a fever
- the joint locks or keeps giving way
- the pain is severe and constant, even at rest and at night
- you cannot put weight on your leg

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about osteoarthritis
Answers to the most common questions about knee and hip osteoarthritis rehabilitation.
Yes, and you should. Exercise and strength training are the first-line treatment for osteoarthritis. The amount and intensity are adjusted to your symptoms, but there is no point in sparing the joint completely.
Osteoarthritis cannot be cured, but you can do a lot to influence your symptoms and function. By building muscle strength, many people can carry on with the hobbies they love.
Exercises that build leg strength, such as squats, lunges, step-ups and gym machines, as well as walking, cycling and exercise in water. Exercises and loads are chosen individually.
Treatment releases the protective tension that builds up around the joint and eases pain and stiffness. It also takes into account how the pelvis, back and ankle work, so that the load is spread more evenly.
You often notice changes within a few weeks. Muscle strength and the joint’s tolerance to load typically build up over 6–12 weeks of regular training.
