What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on treatment approach focused on improving the function and balance of the body’s structures — like joints, muscles, connective tissues and the spine. Osteopaths use manual techniques such as:

  • gentle stretches and mobility work
  • joint mobilisations and manipulations
  • muscle-relaxation techniques
  • fascial work (treatment of connective tissue)

What can osteopathy treat?

Musculoskeletal problems (MSK issues) are among the most common reasons people see an osteopath. Osteopathy looks at the body as a whole — instead of just treating the symptoms where they appear, it seeks to identify and address their underlying causes, such as postural faults, muscle imbalances or restricted spinal mobility.

Common complaints treated with osteopathy:

  • Back pain and sciatica
    – For example, radiating symptoms from a slipped disc, muscle tension or facet joint locks.
  • Neck pain and shoulder tension
    – Common especially for people who work at screens, can also cause headaches or dizziness.
  • Mid-back pain and rib stiffness
    – Can affect breathing, posture and shoulder mobility.
  • Shoulder pain
    – For example rotator cuff issues, frozen shoulder or muscle imbalances.
  • Hip pain and knee pain
    – Common in runners and older adults; may be related to tight muscles, joint load or osteoarthritis.
  • TMJ (jaw) problems
    – Teeth grinding, bite issues or jaw pain can also refer to the neck and head.
  • Scoliosis and postural issues
    – Osteopathy won’t “fix” scoliosis, but it can ease the associated pain and muscle tension.
