Osteopathy for athletes and active people
Athletes and active people benefit from an osteopath’s movement analysis, assessment of muscle balance and hands-on treatment of the tissues. Osteopathy can support recovery and help prevent overuse injuries.
I have played ice hockey since I was seven, about ten years of it in the First Division, then Finland’s second-highest league, and I qualified as a sports massage therapist in 1991. I know an athlete’s everyday life and goals from my own experience too.

Movement analysis, treatment and rehabilitation
At the clinic I examine how your body works in movements that are key to your sport, such as squats, lunges and jumps. Movement analysis helps to find the factors behind the problem, such as restricted mobility and muscle imbalances.
Treatment works on overloaded muscles and joints. After overuse and sports injuries, I put together a rehabilitation programme that takes you back to training in your sport step by step.
As a personal trainer, I can also programme strength training that supports your sport at R5 gym in Metsälä.
Treatment
How treatment works
At the first visit we go through your sport, training volumes and the background of the problem. After the examination and movement analysis, we treat the problem areas and agree on how to adjust your training.
The aim is that you can keep training as much as possible during treatment. Often it is enough to adjust the volume and intensity for a while and add rehab exercises to your training.
Typical problems include knee pain, hip pain, lower back pain, shoulder pain and heel pain.
Safety
When to see a doctor
See a doctor or go to the emergency department if:
- a joint swells a lot straight after an injury or you cannot put weight on your leg
- you suspect a fracture or a torn ligament or tendon
- after a blow to the head you have a headache, dizziness, nausea or memory gaps
- the pain comes with a fever or the joint is hot and red
After a concussion, return to sport happens gradually according to a doctor’s instructions.

Answers to the most common questions about osteopathy for athletes and active people.
Osteopathy helps to find and treat the causes of overuse problems, such as restricted mobility and muscle imbalances, and supports recovery. The aim is to keep your training as uninterrupted as possible.
Rarely completely. Usually the volume and intensity of training are adjusted and alternative forms of training are used until the problem settles.
Fresh injuries where a fracture or tear is suspected should first be assessed by a doctor. Once serious injuries have been ruled out, treatment and rehabilitation can start at my clinic.
Yes. Osteopathy suits everyone who exercises, from competitive athletes to recreational exercisers.
It depends on the sport, training volumes and problems. Many come for treatment during hard training periods or when something starts to bother them.
